National Council on Aging / NCOA Crossroads Online Community

Connect aging-field professionals nationwide since spring 2009 through dedicated groups on the NCOA Crossroads online community, now 6,000 members strong. There, members share practical information on how to do their jobs day to day and/or carry out projects funded by NCOA grants.

Encompasses professionals who direct senior centers, provide reverse mortgages counseling, facilitate economic security for older adults and more.

Managed redesign of a previous version of NCOA.org to better meet users’ and organization’s needs. Edited and restructured all content, provided direction to Web development firm, and conducted user testing. That redesign won a Silver Inkwell award from the D.C. Chapter of International Association of Business Communicators in 2007.

The Story of Chocolate

Sunshine Canyon Landfill

With MAYA Advertising & Communications, assisted Sunshine Canyon Landfill in highlighting its environmental and safety efforts and community outreach through a site relaunch. Led development of information architecture, edited content, and moved project to completion through final quality assurance.

My Medicare Matters

Wrote content and provided design advice for this site, which helps people understand their options under the Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage. Edited the content using plain language principles to ensure that a larger percentage of low-income seniors, who statistics show are more likely to have low literacy, would be able to read the site. Gave advice on colors, fonts and other design and navigation elements to make the site easier for seniors to use.

Site won two Silver Inkwell awards from the D.C. Chapter of International Association of Business Communicators in 2006; one for writing, and one for design.

Literacy Volunteers of the National Capital Area

Re-launched site to create a more professional appearance and added the capability to accept donations online. Created the architecture, named navigation buttons, and assisted in choosing site colors, photos, and design. Edited all text using plain language principles so that the site would be easier for current adult learners and potential clients of LVA to read. Made these improvements while serving as a Board member, 2005-2007.
